During the week I was talking to someone about balance in life and this old thought resurfaced.
SPIES also was one of those acronyms bandied about back in the 80′s (and maybe 70′s) to define a balanced life.
Social – you must indulge in social activity at but not at the expense of the other parts of your life.
Physical – you must indulge in physical activity at but not at the expense of the other parts of your life.
Emotional – you must live with emotion in your life and again not at the expense of the other parts of your life.
Intellectual – you must indulge in intellectual activity at but not at the expense of the other parts of your life.
Spiritual – you must indulge in spiritual activity at but not at the expense of the other parts of your life.
That last one used to bother me until I worked out it is don’t offend your own value system. (that leaves a lot of space for most people)
The basic argument was excess in one area would cause an imbalance in your life and you might not be living to your full potential, after this experiment of my life so far all of my years of it, I can say with a great degree of certainty so far the evidence seems to agree with the basic theory above.
(second edit – I tried to be lazy and those who read this already …. sorry
)
